Using multiple hosting providers
In theory it is possible to use more than one web hosting providers for one single Domain Name. domain and hosting are very closely related, but still remain different aspects of the Global Network.
One can register a Domain name with one company – the actual registry for the .PRO Top-Level Domains, for instance – and point its Authoritative Name Servers toward another organization, specialized in web hosting services. The Authoritative Name Servers (or just Name Servers, NS) control the traffic to and fro the said domain. The NS can belong to a certain hosting provider, while the mail servers associated with the Domain Name can be directed toward another who specializes in top-quality mail services.
Another example would be the usage of a third-level domain which can be hosted elsewhere entirely.
Alternative way to use the services of one or more hosting companies at the same time – even though not particularly effective cost-wise – is to enable forwarding. It has to be done through the coding of the index / default page. By inserting a single line of code on the FTP server of your web host you can redirect all the requests toward another web page. This solution has its applications when a site is steadily moved elsewhere or when it is taken down for maintenance. It would ensure that the visitors are directed to another web place of interest, instead of staring in the “under maintenance” message. The effect can be reversed by removing the redirecting piece of code. Keep in mind that both the forwarding and its removal would need some time to propagate before taking effect.
